Google Search Console: Your First Setup Checklist

Learn how to verify a site, submit a sitemap and review search performance and indexing.

Google Search Console helps site owners understand how their website appears in Google Search. It reports search performance and certain technical or indexing issues; it does not guarantee rankings.

Step-by-step approach

  1. Add a Domain or URL-prefix property in Search Console.
  2. Verify ownership using the method Google provides for your property type.
  3. Submit the sitemap URL after checking that it contains the correct canonical URLs.
  4. Use URL Inspection to request indexing for important new or updated pages when appropriate.
  5. Review the Performance report for queries, pages, clicks and impressions.
  6. Check Page indexing reports and investigate issues affecting important pages.
Practical tip: A submitted URL is not guaranteed to be indexed. Keep pages accessible, useful, internally linked and technically sound.
